Rwanda and Uganda Border Security Efforts Intensify as Military Leaders Commit to Regional Peace

The Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) and the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) have concluded their seventh meeting. This bilateral session involved military officials who manage the shared border between the two nations.

During this high-level event, both sides pledged to strengthen border security. They also committed to promoting lasting peace across the entire region. This important meeting took place in Musanze District. It is part of a larger effort to maintain cooperation and build trust between the two military forces.

Over three days, delegates reviewed resolutions from their previous meeting. That session occurred in Kabale, Uganda, from late September to early October 2025.

Strategic Measures against Cross-Border Crimes

The discussions focused on creating strong plans to manage border security. These plans aim to solve ongoing problems that affect both Rwanda and Uganda. Specifically, military leaders discussed the urgent need to stop illegal border crossings.

They also committed to ending human trafficking and the illegal trade of livestock. Furthermore, the teams discussed how to stop the smuggling of illegal alcohol and fraud. They also addressed cases of personation along the border.

Both sides believe a strong partnership is the best way to keep the region safe. They will achieve this through regular talks and joint military operations.

Expanding Cooperation through Community Engagement

In addition to military operations, the participants highlighted the vital importance of expanding these meetings to include community-focused initiatives. They proposed the inclusion of Civil-Military Cooperation (CIMIC) programs, environmental protection activities, and joint military training exercises to foster a holistic security environment.

Major General Ruki KARUSISI, the Commander of the RDF 5th Division, praised the professional atmosphere and the high level of trust that characterized the negotiations. He noted that these constructive talks reaffirmed the commitment of both countries to maintaining peace and security while ensuring that military leaders continue to share intelligence to address any new threats.
