The Commander of the Mozambique Army, André Rafael Mahunguane, visited the headquarters of the Rwandan Security Forces in Mocímboa da Praia, located in Cabo Delgado Province, northern Mozambique.
Maj Gen Mahunguane made the visit on March 11, 2026. He was received by the Commander of the Rwandan Security Forces, Brig Gen CM Mujuni, alongside the Head of the Police Component and the Commander of Task Force Group-7 Brigade.

Briefing on the Security Situation in Cabo Delgado
During the visit, Maj Gen Mahunguane received a briefing on the current security situation in Cabo Delgado Province.
After the briefing, commanders from both sides held discussions on strengthening operational coordination. They also focused on planning joint military operations and improving the sharing of intelligence information.
Praise for Rwanda–Mozambique Military Cooperation
Maj Gen Mahunguane commended the joint efforts of Mozambican and Rwandan forces in combating terrorism in northern Mozambique.
He emphasized the importance of continued cooperation between the armed forces of the two countries. He also assured the Rwandan forces of his full support in ongoing operations.
Visit Follows Meeting with Rwanda Land Forces Commander
The visit came shortly after the Commander of the Rwanda Land Forces, Vincent Nyakarundi, conducted a working visit to Cabo Delgado Province on February 26, 2026.
While in Pemba, Maj Gen Nyakarundi and his delegation met with Maj Gen André Rafael Mahunguane.
Their discussions focused on reviewing the security situation in the province and assessing upcoming joint military operations.
Progress in the Fight Against Insurgency
Since July 2021, the Rwandan Security Forces and Mozambican troops have conducted joint operations to combat terrorist activities in Cabo Delgado Province.
The province had been severely destabilized by militants linked to Ansar al‑Sunnah.
Security forces have expelled the militants from their main strongholds in several districts. Many insurgents fled into forests, where troops continued to pursue them.
As security improved, displaced residents gradually returned to their homes. In addition, key infrastructure such as electricity services has been restored.
In August 2025, the governments of Rwanda and Mozambique renewed cooperation agreements covering investment and counter-terrorism efforts.
