Russian President Vladimir Putin has said that Russia will take retaliatory measures if European Union countries seize Russian commercial vessels.
The European Union has increased pressure on Russian vessels by expanding sanctions targeting hundreds of ships and by detaining some of them and their crews for inspection.
Some European countries have said they are considering ways to strengthen measures against vessels that violate the sanctions imposed on Russia.
Putin Calls Actions “Piracy”
Russia’s state news agency, TASS, reported that Putin described these actions as piracy.
He said: “Clearly, this means nothing other than piracy and criminal activity. And if they carry it out, we will respond.”
Putin also said that any Russian retaliatory action would not necessarily be limited to the waters where Russian vessels were seized.

Accusations Against NATO
TASS also reported that Putin accused the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) of expanding its activities in Asia and increasing tensions in the Arctic.
“NATO is entering this region. Military and political structures are being established, and weapons capable of creating a threat to Russia are being deployed or are planned to be deployed.”
