Forty three people in Eastern Province were arrested by security organs after being suspected of continuing to store and sell alcoholic drinks that had been removed from the market for failing to meet standards.
According to Rwanda National Police, the arrests were made during a three-day operation aimed at removing from circulation drinks identified as harmful to consumers’ health.

Thousands of Cartons and Liters Seized
The Police spokesperson in Eastern Province, SSP Twizeyimana Hamdun, said that among the seized items were more than 6,000 cartons and 14,752 liters of various alcoholic drinks including Ingwe, Lucky Gin, and Kiwingu.

Traders Accused of Hiding the Drinks
He explained that some traders ignored the directive to surrender the drinks and instead hid them in their homes, with some even storing them under beds, intending to continue selling them secretly.
Police said those arrested have been handed over to relevant authorities for prosecution, while the search for remaining stock is still ongoing.
Residents are urged to avoid consuming these drinks and to report anyone hiding or selling them, as they pose health risks and can affect public safety.
Health Concerns Behind the Crackdown
This comes after the Ministry of Health announced that many people suffered health problems after consuming substandard drinks, with some losing their sight and others dying.
The banned drinks are currently being collected in designated areas across districts, awaiting a program for their complete disposal.
