US President Donald Trump has acknowledged that the war his administration launched against Iran was among the factors that contributed to the Republican Party’s significant losses in the November 3 congressional elections, which saw Democrats gain control of both chambers of Congress.
Speaking on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, after the election results became clear, Trump suggested that the conflict with Iran had influenced voters’ decisions and contributed to the Republicans’ disappointing performance.
According to reports, Trump pointed to the economic consequences of the war, particularly rising gasoline prices, as a factor that may have shaped voter sentiment. He indicated that many Americans were unwilling to bear the short-term financial pressure associated with higher fuel costs.

Rising Fuel Prices Become Election Concern
The conflict has disrupted economic stability, particularly through increased petroleum-related costs, at a time when many Americans were already facing a high cost of living. These economic pressures became an important concern for voters during the election period, with rising fuel prices adding to the financial difficulties experienced by households.
Despite the Democratic Party’s electoral gains, Trump maintained that he would continue opposing legislation he considers inappropriate. He said he would reject Democratic proposals that he believes lack merit, signalling the possibility of continued political confrontations between the White House and Congress.
Democrats Take Control of Both Chambers
The election results showed Democrats winning at least 51 Senate seats, giving the party control of the chamber. Democrats also secured a majority in the House of Representatives, giving them greater authority to scrutinise the Trump administration and influence the legislative agenda. Several key victories highlighted the shift in political power.
In Iowa, Democrat Josh Turek defeated Republican Ashley Hinson to win a Senate seat previously held by the Republican Party. In Virginia, Democrat Elaine Luria defeated Republican Jen Kiggans, reclaiming a seat in the House of Representatives. Senator Bernie Sanders welcomed the Democratic victories, arguing that control of both chambers would strengthen congressional oversight of the Trump administration.
However, Sanders cautioned Democrats against becoming complacent following their success. He urged the party to prioritise the interests of working families and focus on improving living standards for ordinary Americans.

Trump Faces Opposition-Controlled Congress
The Democratic takeover of Congress represents a major political setback for Trump. With two years remaining in his presidential term, he now faces a legislature controlled by the opposition party.
The change in congressional leadership is expected to intensify political battles over government policy, public spending and oversight of the administration.
