Argentine football star Mauro Icardi has been hit with an extraordinary driving restriction that could keep him off the road in Argentina until 2099, following a viral social-media video involving his partner, actress Eugenia “China” Suárez.

Viral Video Triggers Investigation
The controversy began after Suárez shared a video showing her travelling in a moving vehicle driven by Icardi. In the footage, she is seen without a seat belt, with a large part of her body outside the vehicle through the window while Icardi remains behind the wheel.
The video prompted authorities in Buenos Aires Province to investigate Icardi’s driving status. Officials subsequently discovered that his Argentine driving licence had expired in May 2019. The provincial Ministry of Transport therefore imposed a preventive disqualification from driving under the province’s road-safety regulations.

Authorities Raise Road-Safety Concerns
Authorities said the incident raised serious road-safety concerns because Icardi continued driving while his passenger was travelling without a seat belt and partially outside the vehicle.
They stressed that drivers are responsible for maintaining safe conditions for passengers and other road users. Under the measure, Icardi must regularise his driving status before he can legally return to the road. The provincial government said he will need to complete an assessment before obtaining a new licence.

Icardi Challenges the Restriction
Icardi has since challenged the authorities’ decision. The footballer said he holds an Italian driving licence valid until 2029 and criticised the Argentine authorities over the restriction.
The unusual 2099 date has turned the case into an international talking point. If the restriction remained in place until then, Icardi, who was born in 1993, would be 105 years old.
Unexpected Chapter in Icardi’s Career
The incident adds an unexpected chapter to the career of the former Inter Milan, Paris Saint-Germain and Galatasaray striker, who is currently without a club after leaving the Turkish side.
