The Rwanda Social Security Board (RSSB) has announced that the amount Rwandans have saved through the Ejo Heza long-term savings scheme—excluding interest and government contributions—has reached 60 billion Rwandan francs, and when interest and government top-ups are included, the total exceeds 87 billion Rwandan francs. The scheme now has four million members who are actively saving.

This was revealed as the Ejo Heza sensitization campaign continued in Ngoma District on December 8, where motorcycle taxi operators (motari) were briefed on the benefits of saving through Ejo Heza and taught how the Irembo and Ejo Heza systems work, as well as how they can help them save consistently.

Kayumba Bernard, the RSSB officer in charge of Ejo Heza mobilization, said that many motorcycle taxi operators are youth who need to understand the benefits of the scheme and the importance of saving early.

Kayumba added:
“Anyone who has any source of income should join this scheme so that the good life they have today can continue even when they are old and no longer able to work. At that time, their savings will sustain them.”

He explained that Ejo Heza has made remarkable progress, giving them confidence that the scheme will continue to expand and benefit even more Rwandans.

He said:
“Today, Rwandans’ savings have reached 60 billion francs, excluding interest and government contributions. When you add those, it exceeds 87 billion francs.
The number of members actively saving is around four million, though some registered but have not yet begun saving. Altogether, registered members are about 4.7 million.”

Motorcycle taxi operators encouraged to save through Ejo Heza

Current figures show that Ngoma District has more than 1,486 motorcycle taxi operators.

During this mobilization campaign, more than 50 operators received assistance to register for Ejo Heza.

Uwase Divine said:
“I heard my colleagues had already joined and accumulated good savings. I immediately registered because there is no pressure—it’s for our own future benefit. I will continue saving so that I can also progress and reach a comfortable old age.”

Hatumwimfura Jean Paul, who has saved 255,000 Frw, called on his peers to start saving early:
“I can still ride a motorcycle today, but in the future, I may not have the strength. Those who haven’t started saving should do so quickly. Our government even adds bonuses when we save every month.”

Kayumba Bernard emphasized that no Rwandan should miss the opportunity the country has provided:
“This is a highly profitable scheme. We are now at 12% interest, tax-free, with compound interest—Ejo Heza is truly worthwhile. I urge motorcycle taxi operators not to miss this chance. We must use these benefits so that in the future, we don’t become a burden to our families, ourselves, or our country.”

Combined campaign with Gerayo Amahoro

Ngoma District Vice Mayor in charge of Economic Development, Mapambano N. Cyriaque, noted that the Ejo Heza campaign aligned with the ongoing Gerayo Amahoro road safety program.

He said:
“You can save, but if you don’t drive safely, an accident may claim your life. Arrive safely with your passengers, and also stay safe so that you can reach the future where you enjoy the benefits of your savings.”

Since the Ejo Heza scheme started in December 2018, 113,223 residents of Ngoma District have joined, and their collective savings now amount to 1,760,169,694 francs.
