Senator Rugira Amandin stated that 80% of road accidents are caused by motorcyclists, urging continued efforts to raise their awareness about proper driving and respect for traffic laws.

He said that carefulness among motorcyclists is the only effective way to reduce the accidents occurring across the country.

He remarked: “Research shows that nearly 80% of road accidents are caused by motorcyclists. That’s why we call for stronger efforts to educate and encourage them to drive responsibly and in compliance with traffic regulations.”

He made these remarks on October 13, 2025, while visiting Nyagatare District together with his colleague, Senator Nyirasafari Espérance, both members of the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs, Cooperation, and Security. The visit aimed to monitor the implementation of measures designed to prevent road accidents.

The activity began with a meeting that brought together various stakeholders involved in road transport within the district, including motorcyclists, cyclists, transport companies, security organs, and other partners.

Tumwisigye George, President of the Motorcyclists’ Association in Nyagatare District, said: “We regularly conduct awareness campaigns targeting motorcyclists who exhibit reckless behavior on the road. When one is caught violating the law, they are punished in a way that serves as a lesson to others. We work closely with security agencies to track down offenders, especially those who drive under the influence of alcohol or without helmets.”

Speaking on behalf of cyclists, Mabarushimana Cedric said: “Cyclists are often blamed for accidents, but in reality, many of them result from our own behavior. That’s why I urge my fellow cyclists to respect traffic laws, avoid accidents that cost lives, and ensure the safety of our passengers.”

Meanwhile, Senator Nyirasafari Espérance reminded motorcyclists and cyclists to always have all essential equipment for their vehicles.

She said: “Safety items such as bells, good brakes, headlights, and other necessary equipment should never be missing. Moreover, discipline on the road is crucial for everyone—drivers, motorcyclists, and cyclists alike.”

The Mayor of Nyagatare District, Gasana Stephen, stated that in partnership with security organs, the district will continue efforts to prevent accidents and increase road safety awareness among vehicle operators, adding that deliberate violations of traffic laws will not be tolerated.

Currently, Nyagatare District has more than 2,500 registered motorcyclists. They were reminded once again that driving under the influence of alcohol is a crime punishable by law—offenders face penalties including suspension of their driver’s license for three months and a fine of 150,000 Rwandan francs.

There, they visited a driving school to assess whether the training provided meets the required quality standards.
