The construction of the 9-kilometer Nyaruvumu–Gahushyi–Gituku road, aimed at improving trade between residents of Kabare Sector in Kayonza District and those in Ngoma District, is well underway and currently stands at 65% completion.
This compacted dirt road stretches 9 kilometers, beginning in Rukira Sector of Ngoma District along the route to Nasho (Kirehe), passing through Kibatsi Cell, continuing to Nyaruvumu, and extending to Kabare Sector in Kayonza.
Costing over one billion Rwandan francs, the project is being implemented following residents’ requests and is part of the district’s 2024–2025 performance targets.
Work on the road began in April 2025 and is expected to take 12 months. Once completed, it will make it easier to transport agricultural products to markets and enhance local trade.
According to Mapambano Nyiridandi Cyriaque, Ngoma District’s Vice Mayor in charge of Economic Development, the road had been planned in previous years but only partially executed.
He explained, “This year, we committed to completing it. The road works are now at 68%, with most of the heavy construction already finished. The bridges are nearing completion, and what remains are tasks like applying laterite, compacting, and finishing drainage systems. We are confident the road will be completed soon.”
He further encouraged residents to protect the road and use it effectively for their benefit, he added:
“In the past, they faced major difficulties transporting their produce to markets, which made the process costly. Now, as you pass through the area, you can already see progress — people are renovating their homes. Indeed, this road will greatly improve their livelihoods and boost the local economy.”
