Lionel Messi has won almost every major honour available in football. Now, he is set to add another title to his name: Dr Messi.
However, the title has nothing to do with medicine. Messi is being awarded a Doctor Honoris Causa, an honorary doctorate and one of the highest distinctions awarded by the University of Buenos Aires.
The decision was unanimously approved by the university’s Superior Council, which recognised Messi’s excellence, perseverance, humility and commitment to representing Argentina.
The 39-year-old is scheduled to receive the honorary doctorate on October 6, 2026, making an already emotional day even more significant. Just hours later, Messi is expected to walk onto the field at the Monumental for what is set to be his final game for Argentina.

Messi to Receive Honorary Doctorate
The University of Buenos Aires highlighted Messi’s influence beyond his football achievements. University head Ricardo Gelpi described the Argentina captain as an example and ambassador of the country’s popular culture and national identity, while also praising his humility and perseverance.
The recognition therefore goes beyond the goals, trophies and records that have defined Messi’s career. Messi’s journey with Argentina has included the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Copa America titles in 2021 and 2024, and the 2022 Finalissima.

Final Argentina Appearance
Argentina will face Benin in a specially arranged farewell match at the Monumental, bringing an end to Messi’s international career after more than two decades. Argentina Football Association president Claudio Tapia said the match was arranged to give Messi “the farewell he truly deserves”.
Messi is expected to make his 208th and final appearance for Argentina. The official presentation of the honorary doctorate is scheduled for Tuesday, October 6, just hours before Messi’s reported international farewell match. So, before Messi pulls on Argentina’s famous No. 10 shirt for the final time, he will have one more title to add to his extraordinary collection: Dr Messi.
