Senator Uwizeyimana Evode has called on the Government to intervene over charges imposed by MTN Rwanda on mobile money transfers, saying the fees are expensive for citizens.

Uwizeyimana raised the issue before Prime Minister Justin Nsengiyumva, who was addressing Parliament on developments in the financial sector.
He first commended the Government for introducing eKash, a mobile money transfer platform with low transaction costs, where users pay Rwf 20 per transfer.
He then said: “MTN’s charges are very expensive. Please engage with the company so that it stops squeezing citizens.”
The senator went on to present figures showing that transfer charges start at transactions of Rwf 250 and increase significantly as the amount being sent becomes larger.
The State Minister in the Ministry of Finance said that eKash was introduced to reduce transaction costs and encourage other service providers to consider lowering their fees.
