Oman-based airline SalamAir has officially launched flights connecting Muscat and Kigali as part of its strategy to expand its operations in Africa.
SalamAir Introduces Twice-Weekly Kigali Service
SalamAir will operate two weekly flights between Muscat and Kigali, on Mondays and Thursdays, providing passengers with a convenient and affordable travel option between Oman and Rwanda.
Rwanda Expects Economic and Travel Benefits
Rwanda’s representative in Oman, Hamood Khalfan Al Busaidi, welcomed the milestone, saying the new route would strengthen ties between the two countries and particularly benefit citizens engaged in business activities.
The State Minister in the Ministry of Infrastructure, Col. Claudien Bizimungu, said expanding air transport services is part of Rwanda’s efforts to promote economic growth.
Minister Bizimungu said Rwanda expects the new route to increase the number of visitors from the Middle East while creating more investment opportunities. He added that Rwandans will now have a more convenient and affordable travel option.
“Some of our people used to travel to Dubai to purchase goods, while others travelled to Asia or Europe through different connecting routes and other countries. This flight will help people travel faster and reduce costs for Rwandans, residents in Rwanda, as well as those coming from Oman and other regions to Rwanda,” he said.
SalamAir passengers will also have the opportunity to connect to other destinations in the Middle East, Asia, Africa, and Europe.
The new route comes amid growing cooperation between Rwanda and Oman and is expected to contribute to increased trade, tourism, and investment between the two countries.
Inaugural Flight Arrives in Kigali
The inaugural flight arrived at Kigali International Airport on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, at 12:50 p.m.
The launch ceremony was held at Muscat International Airport and was attended by officials and representatives from various institutions, including SalamAir, Oman Airports, Oman’s Civil Aviation Authority, the Rwanda Embassy in Oman, aviation and tourism partners, as well as media representatives.
The first flight included a delegation from Oman that travelled to Rwanda to join celebrations marking the launch of the new route.
Ambassador Munyuza Hails Stronger Rwanda-Oman Relations
Rwanda’s Ambassador to Oman, CG Dan Munyuza, said the launch of the route marks a significant step in strengthening relations and cooperation between Rwanda and Oman.
He commended the Government of Oman for supporting the launch of flights to Kigali, describing it as a historic journey.
Ambassador Munyuza said that if Rwanda’s national carrier, RwandAir, decides to introduce flights to Oman, it will receive swift support and could begin operations whenever it is ready.
Rwanda welcomed the development, saying it will contribute to strengthening bilateral relations and increasing interactions between citizens of the two countries.
SalamAir Eyes Tourism and Business Growth
SalamAir Chief Executive Officer Adrian Hamilton-Mans said launching flights to Kigali represents a major milestone in the airline’s expansion into new markets with strong potential in tourism and business.
“Launching our flights to Kigali is another important step in SalamAir’s journey of expanding its operations as we continue to reach new markets that support tourism growth, business development, and enhanced international connectivity,” he said.
