Master’s Degree Programs in Theology Launched in Rwanda

The Africa College of Theology (ACT) has launched postgraduate programs in Rwanda. These new programs focus on Theology at the Master’s level. The aim is to improve training for preachers and religious leaders. The official announcement was made last week in Kicukiro, near ACT’s premises.

New Programs Offered

ACT now offers a Master of Theology (MTh) and a Postgraduate Certificate in Counselling. The Theology program focuses on advanced religious studies. Meanwhile, the counselling program teaches practical skills for family support, trauma healing, and emotional care. Both programs are accredited by the Higher Education Council (HEC), ensuring they meet national academic standards.

Enrollment and Schedule

Teaching begins in August this year. The Theology program plans to enroll 40–50 students in its first intake. Currently, the college is focusing on student registration. Previously, ACT offered undergraduate Theology programs and short courses. These new postgraduate programs mark an important step in the college’s growth.

Supporting Rwanda’s Knowledge-Based Vision

The Founder of Africa New Life Ministries and Honorary Chancellor of ACT, Rev. Dr. Mugisha Charles, said the new programs align with Rwanda’s vision of building a knowledge-based economy. Rwanda had not previously offered postgraduate degrees in Theology. He added that these programs will help preachers advance toward PhD studies, preparing them to teach Theology in the future.

Counselling Program Addresses Social Challenges

Rev. Dr. Mugisha explained that the Postgraduate Certificate in Counselling will equip graduates with essential skills for social support and family care. In addition, it offers a pathway to further academic studies in counselling. The program responds to growing social needs, including trauma recovery and emotional guidance.

Preparing Religious Leaders for Modern Churches

The Vice Chancellor of ACT, Prof. Nathan Chiroma, stated that the programs meet the demand for highly educated religious leaders. Churches in Rwanda and across Africa now have many members with advanced degrees. Therefore, preachers need strong knowledge to interpret religious teachings effectively.

Comprehensive Curriculum and Professional Standards

The Master’s program combines biblical studies, preaching, leadership, sociology, and ethics. It aims to develop well-rounded religious leaders who can connect faith with daily life. In addition, holding such qualifications is now a requirement by the Rwanda Governance Board for establishing churches or religious organizations. These programs ensure that leaders meet professional standards and respond to modern societal needs.

The launch of the new programs at Africa College of Theology was attended by various stakeholders in the field of theology
Former students of Africa College of Theology were among those who attended the event marking the launch of the two new programs
The Vice Chancellor of ACT, Prof. Nathan Chiroma, explained that as people become more educated, there is a growing need for equally well-educated preachers.
