Rwandan President Paul Kagame has said the country will continue taking all necessary measures to protect its security despite criticism, pressure, and international sanctions.

Addressing Regional Conflicts and Unfair Pressure
Speaking in Kigali on August 24, 2026, Kagame addressed concerns over the FDLR armed group, conflicts in eastern DR Congo, and international responses to the crisis. He said Rwanda has faced unfair blame and pressure while the security threats it faces remain unresolved.
Rejecting Sanctions and Prioritizing Self-Defense
Kagame criticized sanctions, saying they often increase tensions rather than solve the root causes of conflicts. He insisted that Rwanda cannot rely on others to protect it and will act whenever necessary to defend its interests.
He also said Rwanda remains committed to peace efforts in Africa, adding that the country is ready to support and defend peace while prioritizing its own national security.
