The Chief of Defence Forces of Uganda and Senior Presidential Advisor, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has promoted Brigadier General Asaph Mweteise to the rank of Major General and appointed him as Commander of the Special Forces.
The promotion and new assignment were announced on Monday, August 3, 2026, in a statement released by the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF).
Maj Gen Asaph Mweteise Nyakikuru takes over as Acting Commander of the Special Forces, succeeding Maj Gen David Mugisha, who is set to pursue further studies at the National Defence College (NDC).
The UPDF statement, signed by Spokesperson Colonel Chris Magezi, confirmed that both the promotion and appointment take immediate effect. It also expressed gratitude to Maj Gen David Mugisha for his service as Special Forces Commander and wished him success in his upcoming studies.
The statement further congratulated Maj Gen Asaph Mweteise Nyakikuru on his new responsibilities, extending best wishes for his leadership of the Special Forces.
