Traders Fear Heavy Losses
Traders operating inside the building were left distressed after seeing the fire engulf the premises. Some reportedly sat on the ground crying as they feared losing their businesses and merchandise. Another resident of Musanze told IGIHE that the affected section was on the upper floor, where tailors and second-hand clothing sellers operate.
The resident said: “The fire is still burning, and the fire brigade is trying to put it out. By the time we are speaking, it has been burning for 20 minutes. It started at around 3 p.m., close to 4 p.m.”
The resident added that everyone had evacuated the building, but traders working on the upper floor were particularly worried that their merchandise might have been destroyed.
The resident said: “People are distressed, understandably, because they have lost their belongings. I think those who work upstairs, where the fire started, may not be able to save anything. They will suffer losses,”
Musanze District Mayor Claudien Nsengimana told IGIHE that he would provide further information about the cause of the fire later. The cause had not been established at the time of reporting.
