Prime Minister Dr. Justin Nsengiyumva has urged young people who completed the 16th edition of Itorero Indangamirwa to make the right choices, warning that although they will have many opportunities to pursue, they will also face distractions and temptations.
He made the remarks on August 10, 2026, during the closing ceremony of the 16th edition of Itorero Indangamirwa, held at the Gabiro Military Training Centre in Gatsibo District.
Youth Have Greater Opportunities
Dr. Nsengiyumva said today’s youth have greater opportunities because they grew up in a Rwanda that offers many possibilities, unlike the generation that came before 1994.
He explained that the responsibilities of today’s youth differ from those of the generation that liberated Rwanda after the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.
“What your country expects of you is different from what was expected of the youth who liberated Rwanda. They found Rwanda devastated by the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, but their courage was demonstrated through rebuilding the country, restoring Rwandans’ unity, and laying the foundation for the development Rwanda is experiencing today.”
Build on Rwanda’s Achievements
The Prime Minister reminded the young people that they now have a strong foundation on which to build and contribute to making Rwanda stronger and more developed.
“You grew up in a Rwanda that had rebuilt itself, with many opportunities and a promising future. Your responsibility, therefore, is to protect the achievements that have been made and build on them so that the country can reach a level far beyond where it is today.”
He encouraged them to use the opportunities available to them while remaining committed to protecting the progress Rwanda has achieved.
Character Tested Through Difficult Choices
Dr. Nsengiyumva said the young people who completed Itorero Indangamirwa will encounter many opportunities but should remain aware of distractions and temptations that could influence their decisions.
“There are many opportunities available to young people like you to take advantage of, but I also want to remind you that there are many distractions and temptations. You will often find that doing what is right seems difficult, but that is precisely where your values and character as Intore will be demonstrated.”
He urged them to demonstrate the values they acquired through Itorero by making responsible decisions, particularly when faced with difficult choices.
769 Intore Complete 16th Edition
The 16th edition of Itorero Indangamirwa comprised 769 Intore, including 315 girls and 454 boys. They underwent training at the Gabiro Military Training Centre in Gatsibo District.
The training covered various areas, including improving proficiency in the Kinyarwanda language, Rwandan cultural values and taboos, marksmanship, and other basic military skills.
Participants came from different groups, including Rwandans living or studying abroad, students from international secondary schools, university students, and young people who performed exceptionally well during the 13th edition of Urugerero rw’Inkomezabigwi.
The latest cohort brings the total number of young people who have undergone training under the programme to 5,216, across more than 15 previous editions.
