The International Automobile Federation (FIA) has withdrawn the Burundi Automobile Racing Association (CAB)’s right to host international competitions scheduled for 2026, citing poor management.
Burundi is one of the countries that has hosted international motor racing competitions on gravel roads, particularly those forming part of the African Rally Championship.
In 2026, Burundi did not host any of these competitions. Instead, participants in the African Rally Championship competed in countries including Rwanda, in the Rwanda Mountain Gorilla Rally; Kenya, in the Safari Rally WRC; Uganda, in the Pearl of Africa Rally; and Tanzania, in the Mkwawa Rally.

Management Issues Cited
The failure to host the competition was mainly attributed to problems in the management of international competitions organized by CAB and the association’s failure to properly manage and maintain the funds allocated for hosting such events.
The FIA decided to suspend the association, which is headed by Silas Pacifique Nsaguye. He has been accused of contributing to the association’s poor management since he was elected in 2025.
Another factor that led the FIA to withdraw Burundi’s right to host international competitions was the failure to submit, in advance, the roads that would be used for international level competitions.

Drivers Still Eligible to Compete
Although the association has been suspended, its members are still allowed to compete in international competitions. They did so in July 2026 when they participated in the Rwanda Mountain Gorilla Rally 2026 in Rwanda.
