The Rwandan national team, Amavubi, is preparing for a crucial clash against Liberia in the race for a place at the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), with the match potentially setting the tone for Rwanda’s Group K campaign.
The match will be played at Amahoro Stadium on Friday, September 25, as Rwanda begins its AFCON 2027 qualifying campaign. Amavubi are in Group K alongside Mali, Cape Verde and Liberia.
As Rwandans prepare to fill Amahoro Stadium and support their national team, there are several reasons why the Rwanda vs Liberia encounter is attracting attention.

Amavubi Return Home in Front of Their Fans
One factor expected to motivate Amavubi is the opportunity to play at home in front of their supporters, after spending months without a competitive international match.
The newly renovated Amahoro Stadium has become an important venue for Rwanda’s international matches, with a capacity of more than 45,000 spectators.
Head coach Stephen Constantine has called on Rwandans to attend the match in large numbers, saying the team needs the support of the fans.
He said, “They must come to see us, to support us because we need them. We cannot do it without the fans. Fill Amahoro Stadium, make Liberia feel that it is not just playing against 11 players but against 14 million.”
Rwanda’s home advantage could therefore be an important factor as the team begins its qualification campaign.
Amavubi’s previous competitive action came in March 2026, when the team won the FIFA Series Group A tournament at Amahoro Stadium.

Liberia Is a Match Rwanda Can Compete In
Football is unpredictable, but Rwanda enters the match knowing that Liberia is a team it can compete against as it looks to collect points in Group K.
The group also contains Mali and Cape Verde, both of whom present difficult challenges. Liberia, however, offers Rwanda an opportunity to make a positive start before facing the other teams.
Liberia is coached by Moroccan Adil Mohamed Erradi, who previously coached APR FC. Rwanda coach Constantine has insisted that his team respects every opponent but is focused on winning the opening match.
He said: “No one scares us. We respect everyone, but we fear no one. We will first face Liberia, after that face Cape Verde and then in November we will play Mali. At this moment, what interests me is beating Liberia.”
The two countries have also met in previous AFCON qualifying campaigns. Rwanda defeated Liberia 4-0 in 2007 after losing the first leg 3-2 in 2006.

3. Three Points Would Give Amavubi a Positive Start
The fact that AFCON 2027 will be hosted by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda gives the qualification campaign additional significance for Rwanda, which is seeking to return to the continental tournament.
The qualification campaign is being played across six matchdays, with Group K matches taking place through March 2027.
Winning the opening match would give Amavubi three points and provide a positive start to a campaign in which every point could matter.
Rwanda has appeared at the senior AFCON finals only once, in 2004. The team is therefore seeking to return to the competition after more than two decades away.
4. Amavubi Have New Players to Watch
Amavubi have continued to introduce new players as the team undergoes a rebuilding process, creating opportunities for players to establish themselves at international level.
Among the players attracting attention is Joy-Lance Mickels, who recently became the first Rwandan to play in the UEFA Champions League league phase. He has also said that helping Rwanda qualify for AFCON 2027 is one of his objectives.
Mugisha Bonheur, who plays for Al Masry, is another player expected to attract attention. Noam Emeran, who has previously been associated with Manchester United and currently plays for FC Groningen, is also part of Constantine’s squad.
The Mickels brothers also attracted attention during Rwanda’s FIFA Series campaign in March, when they featured for Amavubi.
While those matches provided encouraging moments, the Liberia game will offer a different test because it is a competitive AFCON qualifier.

5. Constantine’s Project Faces Its First Major Test
Since English coach Stephen Constantine returned to lead Amavubi, he has spoken about building a competitive team with a winning mentality.
Constantine returned to the Rwanda job in March 2026 for his second spell in charge, having previously coached the national team in 2015.
He has also coached several other national teams, including India, Sudan and Nepal, giving him experience in international football.
The Rwanda vs Liberia match will provide an early test of the new project and show how the team responds when the stakes are higher than in friendly matches.
For Amavubi, the immediate objective is clear: begin the AFCON 2027 qualifying campaign with a strong performance at home before travelling to Praia to face Cape Verde on September 29.
