Catholics in Rwanda and around the world are celebrating the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary today, Saturday, August 15, 2026, a major feast in the Catholic Church.
The day, commonly known as ‘Assomption’, is celebrated every year on August 15 and commemorates the Catholic belief that the Virgin Mary was taken into heavenly glory.
The Catholic liturgical calendar for Rwanda lists August 15 as the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Meaning and Significance of the Assumption
The Assumption is the belief that Mary was taken body and soul into heaven at the end of her earthly life.
The Catholic Church teaches that the Assumption is closely connected to Mary’s role as the mother of Jesus and represents a sign of hope for believers.
The Vatican explains that the feast celebrates Mary’s assumption into heaven and points to the Christian hope of the resurrection and eternal life.
The Assumption is one of the solemnities dedicated to the Virgin Mary in the Catholic liturgical calendar.
Today’s celebration uses white as its liturgical colour, according to the Catholic calendar for August 15, 2026.
The readings for the day include the account of Mary’s visitation to Elizabeth, as well as passages focusing on Mary and the hope of salvation.

Public Holiday and Celebrations Across Rwanda
August 15 is also recognized as a public holiday in Rwanda.
The official holiday calendar lists Assumption Day on Saturday, August 15, 2026. The holiday is observed on Monday, August 17.
Across Catholic communities, the Assumption is marked through religious celebrations centered on prayer, Mass and devotion to the Virgin Mary.
The feast provides an opportunity for Catholics to reflect on Mary’s life, her faith and her place in the Christian faith.
In Kigali and other parts of Rwanda, Catholic faithful are expected to join fellow believers in marking the feast through religious activities organized by their respective communities.
The Assumption has been celebrated in the Catholic Church for centuries. The Vatican notes that the feast was already being celebrated on August 15 in the fifth century, while Pope Pius XII formally defined the dogma of Mary’s bodily Assumption into heaven in 1950.
For Catholics, the celebration is therefore not only a commemoration of Mary but also a reminder of the Christian hope of eternal life and the resurrection of the body.
