A 32-year-old man from Rutsiro District lost his life after entering an unauthorized mining site to steal minerals when the mine shaft collapsed on him.
The tragic incident happened on the evening of June 26, 2026, at around 4:00 p.m. in Rusisiro Village, Kabujenje Cell, Kivumu Sector.
Mine Shaft Collapsed During Illegal Mining
According to local authorities, the victim had entered an unauthorized mine with the intention of stealing minerals when the shaft suddenly caved in.
The Executive Secretary of Kivumu Sector, Icyizihiza Alda, said the man was accompanied by others who attempted to rescue him after the collapse.
She said: “He went to steal minerals in an unauthorized mine shaft, which collapsed on him. His companions tried to rescue him, but unfortunately, he was pulled out dead,” she told IGIHE.
Authorities Warn Against Illegal Mining
Following the incident, local authorities urged residents to stay away from illegal mining activities, warning that such practices continue to put lives at risk.
Icyizihiza emphasized that unauthorized mining not only leads to fatal accidents but also causes significant environmental damage.
She encouraged community members to report illegal mining operations and to engage only in authorized mining activities that comply with safety regulations.
Body Taken to Murunda Hospital
After the victim was recovered from the collapsed mine, his body was transported to Murunda Hospital for medical examination before being released for burial.
The incident serves as another reminder of the dangers associated with illegal mining, highlighting the need for stronger community awareness and adherence to mining safety regulations.
