Kigali Makes History as First African City to Receive UCI Bike City Label Award

Kigali has received the “UCI Bike City Label Award” from the International Cycling Union. It becomes the first city in Africa and the 31st in the world to earn this honor. The award recognizes Kigali’s successful hosting of the 2025 UCI Road World Championships and its progress in cycling development.

The award was presented at the “UCI Mobility & Bike City” conference held in Athens on May 10–11, 2026. The event gathered leaders and experts in urban mobility. They shared ideas on sustainable transport, cycling promotion, and city planning.

Historic Cycling Milestone for Africa

Kigali hosted the 2025 UCI Road World Championships from September 21–28. It marked the first time the event took place in Africa. The event received praise for its organization. It also showed Rwanda’s ability to host major international sports events.

Rwanda was represented at the ceremony by State Minister for Sports Rwego Ngarambe and Rwanda Cycling Federation (FERWACY) President Samson Ndayishimiye.

UCI Praises Kigali’s Achievement

The President of the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), David Lappartient, praised Kigali’s role in cycling history. He said hosting the first World Championships in Africa was a major milestone. He also said it helped shape the future of cycling.

“By hosting this event the first ever in Africa Kigali took a historic step in cycling. Strong planning and initiatives helped the city write its name in history and shape the future of cycling on the continent,” he said.

Recognition of Urban Mobility and Development

The “UCI Bike City” label goes to cities that excel in hosting cycling events. It also recognizes cities that promote sustainable urban mobility. Kigali earned the award for its investment in transport systems and cycling culture.

Kigali City Mayor Samuel Dusengiyumva said the award reflects the city’s commitment to better transport systems. He also said it supports efforts to improve residents’ well-being.

Sports Minister Nelly Mukazayire said the recognition shows Rwanda’s ambition. She said the country aims to become a hub for sports, tourism, and international events.
