Project Background and Phases
Rusizi District is already working on the rehabilitation from Kamembe to Bugarama road. This road has been in poor condition for some time. It is about 35 kilometers long. It was constructed in 2004 with an expected lifespan of 15 years, according to the original feasibility study. This means it reached the end of its design life in 2019.
The project has two phases. The first phase covers 22 kilometers from the Rusizi border to Nzahaha Sector. The second phase covers over 11 kilometers from Nzahaha to Bugarama.
Importance for Regional Trade
This road plays an important role in regional trade. It connects to routes from the Rusizi II border post, linking Rwanda with the Democratic Republic of Congo. It also connects to the Ruhwa border post, which links Rwanda with Burundi.
