The new Deputy Force Commander of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), Maj Gen Laston Ngosa, has urged Rwandan troops of RWANBATT-1, based at the UN Tomping compound in Juba, to remain vigilant and continue maintaining security.
He made the call on October 6, 2026, during a visit to the Rwandan troops in Juba. Maj Gen Ngosa was accompanied by the Chief of Staff at UNMISS Headquarters, Brig Gen Daisuke Horiguchi, and other staff from the UNMISS Force Headquarters.
The visit was aimed at helping the Deputy Force Commander get acquainted with RWANBATT-1 personnel, assess their military operations, understand the challenges they face, and identify ways to support the implementation of the peacekeeping mission’s mandate.
Upon arrival at the RWANBATT-1 headquarters, Maj Gen Ngosa was received by the battalion commander, Lt Col Aloys Ntagwabira, who briefed him on the troops’ activities and responsibilities.
Lt Col Ntagwabira highlighted RWANBATT-1’s role in protecting civilians, supporting humanitarian operations, and maintaining security within its area of responsibility.
He thanked Maj Gen Ngosa for the visit, saying it boosts the morale of Rwandan troops and demonstrates the continued support of the UNMISS leadership.Lt Col Ntagwabira also reiterated that RWANBATT-1 will continue to fulfill its duties with good conduct and professionalism.

Troops Urged to Prepare for New Tasks
In his remarks, Maj Gen Ngosa said the visit gave him an opportunity to better understand the nature of RWANBATT-1’s operations and identify areas where UNMISS Force leadership can provide assistance.
He urged the soldiers to remain vigilant in maintaining security, intensify training, and stay prepared for new tasks that may arise, particularly those related to the election period scheduled for December in South Sudan.
He also emphasized the importance of protecting civilians and supporting humanitarian operations while respecting established UNMISS procedures and guidelines, as well as authorized communication channels.
Maj Gen Ngosa assured RWANBATT-1 that the UNMISS Force leadership would continue to cooperate with the battalion and provide the necessary support.
The visit also included a tree-planting exercise, followed by an inspection of RWANBATT-1 equipment.
