Manchester City fans have a long-standing tradition of bringing inflatable bananas to football matches, creating a colourful atmosphere in the stands and celebrating a distinctive part of the club’s supporter culture.
Manchester City coach Enzo Maresca said he was surprised to learn the history behind the tradition and expressed his hope that more fans would bring the inflatable bananas to stadiums.
He made the remarks during a press conference ahead of a Premier League Matchday 7 fixture against Ipswich. Maresca said, “It’s very nice! I didn’t know the history behind these bananas and our fans. I hope I will see more of them in the stadium.”
He added that the bananas contribute to a lively atmosphere among supporters and throughout the stadium. His comments followed an occasion when Manchester City fans brought large inflatable bananas to a match against Liverpool at Anfield.
The Tradition Dates Back to 1987
The tradition reportedly began in 1987, when a Manchester City supporter brought an inflatable banana to one of the club’s matches. Over time, the unusual item became a recognisable symbol of the club’s fan culture.
The inflatable bananas helped Manchester City supporters express their identity in stadiums, particularly during difficult periods in the club’s history. Their bright colours and unusual appearance brought humour and excitement to the stands, making them a memorable feature of the supporters’ culture.

More Than Just Inflatable Bananas
For Manchester City supporters, the bananas represent more than simply an item to wave during a football match. They are associated with the club’s history and the distinctive ways fans have expressed their loyalty over the years.
The tradition also demonstrates how football supporters develop unique customs that strengthen their sense of belonging and help create an atmosphere that makes matchdays memorable. As Maresca expressed his appreciation for the tradition, the inflatable bananas remained a colourful reminder of the creativity and identity that supporters bring to football.
