The Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB) arrested the executive secretary of Kansi Sector in Gisagara District, suspected of concealing a factory brewing substandard alcohol.
In recent days, various institutions in Rwanda have intensified efforts to eliminate substandard alcohol. On Thursday, August 6, 2026, the executive secretary of Kansi Sector in Gisagara District, named Gasana Isaie, was arrested on suspicion of hiding a factory producing substandard alcohol in his sector.
Investigation Underway
Sources says that the executive secretary is being held at the RIB station in Ndora, Gisagara District.
Since Gisagara District Mayor Jérôme Rutaburingoga is currently on leave, he could not be reached for comment on the matter.
UMUSEKE asked the Deputy Mayor in charge of Economic Development, Habineza Jean Paul, who confirmed that the executive secretary is under investigation by RIB but did not provide further details.
Reliable information reaching UMUSEKE indicates that not only the sector executive secretary was arrested, but also the village leader where the factory was located.
Nationwide Crackdown on Substandard Alcohol
On Saturday in Kigali, RIB and Police presented 16 people, including factory owners and workers, who were arrested on suspicion of producing substandard beverages that had harmful effects on people’s health.
RIB and Police said that 80 people across the country have been arrested, including leaders in various institutions, and that investigations are ongoing, meaning some may be released while others may still be arrested depending on their involvement in the scandal of substandard alcohol.
