Rwanda Meteorology Agency (Meteo Rwanda) has reported that the last 10 days of July 2026 (July 21–31) were characterized by above-normal temperatures across most parts of the country, with the highest temperature of 34.5°C recorded in the Bugarama Plain in Rusizi District.
According to Meteo Rwanda’s Climate Report for Farmers and Livestock Keepers, released on August 3, 2026, temperatures during the period were generally higher than the long-term average for the same dates, based on climate records spanning the past 30 years.
The report indicates that maximum temperatures exceeded the seasonal average across much of the country between July 21 and July 31. The lowest maximum temperature was recorded at the Ruhunde weather station in Burera District at 23.1°C, while Bugarama in Rusizi District registered the country’s highest maximum temperature of 34.5°C.
Meteo Rwanda highlighted that the Bugarama Plain remained the hottest area in Rwanda throughout the period.
Minimum temperatures also showed noticeable changes, with most parts of the country recording values above the long-term average for the same period. The Busogo weather station in Musanze District recorded the country’s lowest minimum temperature of 11.4°C, making it the coldest location during the period. In contrast, Bugarama recorded a minimum temperature of 19°C.
Below-Average Rainfall Across Most Areas
Rainfall during the last 10 days of July was generally below the long-term average for the period.
However, some areas experienced above-normal rainfall, particularly parts of the northwestern region and the districts of Kayonza, Nyagatare, Gatsibo, Gicumbi, Bugesera, Kamonyi, and Huye.
Elsewhere, rainfall was recorded on between one and four days. The Busogo ISAE weather station in Musanze District recorded the highest rainfall, receiving 52.1 millimeters over four days. The Gisenyi Aero weather station in Rubavu District recorded 26.3 millimeters over three days, while the Kirimbo weather station in Nyamasheke District received 15.3 millimeters over two days.
Most parts of the City of Kigali, the Southern Province, and the districts of Rusizi, Karongi, Bugesera, Nyagatare, Ngoma, and Kayonza recorded no rainfall during the period.
Soil Moisture Continues to Decline
Meteo Rwanda also noted that soil moisture continued to decline across most parts of the country due to the ongoing dry season, except in some areas of the Western Province where rainfall helped improve moisture levels.
The agency warned that soil moisture is expected to continue decreasing in the coming days as dry weather conditions persist.
Forecast for August 1–10, 2026
For the period August 1–10, 2026, Meteo Rwanda forecasts rainfall ranging between 0 and 25 millimeters in some parts of the country, which is below the seasonal average for the same dates.
Advice for Farmers and Livestock Keepers
Farmers have been advised to consult local agricultural extension officers for guidance on preparations for the 2027 Season A planting season. Those currently engaged in Season C farming are encouraged to continue cultivating in marshlands and irrigating crops wherever possible.
Livestock farmers have also been urged to seek advice from veterinary officers on appropriate livestock management practices based on the expected weather conditions.
