President Paul Kagame expressed his gratitude to his counterpart from Guinea, Mamady Doumbouya, who was elected to lead the West African nation, having secured 86.7% of the vote.
On January 5, 2026, the Supreme Court of Guinea validated the election results showing that President Mamady Doumbouya, who previously led the transitional government, won the election with 86.7% of the vote.
Guinea’s election was held on December 28, 2025. Yero Baldé came in second with 6.59% of the vote.
President Mamady Doumbouya will serve a seven-year term as the leader of Guinea.
Through a post on X (formerly Twitter), President Kagame thanked his counterpart and stated that Rwanda will continue to work closely with Guinea to promote the development of both countries.
He said, “We will continue to strengthen the strong bilateral relationship and collaborate closely to advance our shared priorities and the development of our countries.”
Doumbouya came to power after leading a military coup that removed Alpha Condé from office in September 2021.
On January 4, 2026, President Doumbouya addressed the nation on television, saying that Guinea has entered a new era marked by unity among its citizens.
He stated, “Today, we enter a period without winners or losers. Now there is one united Guinea.”
He called on the people to build a peaceful and just Guinea, one where all citizens share and enjoy political and economic independence.
The relationship between Rwanda and Guinea-Conakry remains strong. It is reinforced by state visits by the leaders of both countries and cooperation across various sectors.
In May 2025, Brigadier General Mamady Doumbouya, leader of Guinea-Conakry, visited Rwanda in a trip aimed at strengthening the friendship between the two nations.
General Doumbouya was last in Rwanda in August 2024, where he attended the inauguration ceremony of President Paul Kagame, who had recently been re-elected to continue leading the country.
Earlier, in January 2024, he also visited Kigali on a mission to strengthen bilateral cooperation.
On November 11, 2025, President Paul Kagame travelled to Guinea for a two-day official working visit.
In May 2024, President Kagame had likewise paid a working visit to Guinea-Conakry, during which the two leaders held discussions on expanding Rwanda, Guinea cooperation in key sectors, including technology, trade, and investment.
Rwanda and Guinea maintain cooperation agreements covering multiple areas, such as technology, agriculture, investment, services, tourism, energy, and commerce. These agreements were signed in October 2024.
Additionally, the two countries signed a broad partnership treaty in October 2024, aimed at accelerating collaboration across strategic sectors including technology, agriculture, investment, services, tourism, energy, and trade.
