Ntezimana Bertain, a security guard, died while attempting to raise the Rwandan flag. The 36-year-old climbed a metal structure to hoist the flag, but it broke, causing him to fall to the ground and sustain fatal injuries.
Ntezimana was guarding Mweya Health Centre in Gahunga Cell, Nyagisozi Sector, Nyanza District.
A family member told IGIHE that on August 14, 2026, Ntezimana climbed the structure, but when he reached the top, it broke and he fell, hitting his head on the ground and sustaining serious internal injuries.

He Was Transferred to CHUB
He was taken to Mweya Health Centre, where he was referred to Nyanza District Hospital. He was subsequently transferred to the University Teaching Hospital of Butare (CHUB), where he died.
“He worked for a cooperative called Umoja ni Nguvu Rwanda Cooperative. He died after reaching CHUB.”

Health Centre Awaits Medical Report
Ukwitegetse Léocadie, Deputy Director of Mweya Health Centre, said she had also heard about the incident but could not provide further details because she had not yet received the medical report.
Ntezimana Bertain is survived by his wife and four children. His body is currently at CHUB.
