The Ngoma District administration has announced plans to increase maize production during the 2027A planting season by cultivating the crop on 20,943 hectares, as part of efforts to strengthen food security and improve residents’ livelihoods.
The plans were unveiled during a meeting held to prepare for the 2027A agricultural season, where officials outlined a range of measures aimed at ensuring a successful farming season. These include the timely distribution of seeds and fertilizers, the promotion of Conservation Agriculture, and the continued implementation of the land consolidation program.
District Calls for Early Preparation
Ngoma District Vice Mayor in charge of Economic Development, Cyriaque Mapambano Nyiridandi, said early preparation is essential to ensuring farmers achieve higher yields.
He said: “We must view every planting season as an opportunity to further strengthen food security. It is difficult to expect meaningful development from a hungry population. We therefore urge all agricultural stakeholders to continue working closely with farmers by equipping them with modern farming techniques and sustainable land management practices to boost productivity,”
He added that weather forecasts indicate the district is expected to receive adequate rainfall, making it crucial to ensure seeds and agricultural inputs are delivered on time while addressing any challenges before they disrupt farming activities.
Timely Input Distribution Key to Higher Yields
He added: “We are fortunate that weather forecasts predict sufficient rainfall. Our responsibility is to ensure that seeds and fertilizers are available on time and that farmers receive the support services they need to cultivate effectively. If we all work together, it is possible to double production, which is one of the targets under NST2,”
Maize and Agricultural Inputs Prioritized
According to Ngoma District, maize will be cultivated on 20,943 hectares during the 2027A season, making it one of the priority crops grown under the land consolidation program.
The district also plans to distribute 252,633 kilograms of maize seed, along with fertilizers including DAP, UREA, and NPK, to ensure farmers have all the necessary inputs to increase production.
Conservation Agriculture Expansion
In addition, Ngoma District intends to expand Conservation Agriculture practices to 10,500 hectares, with the aim of preventing soil erosion, preserving soil fertility, and increasing agricultural productivity in a sustainable manner.
