Eastern Province Authorities Raise Alarm Over Alcohol Abuse Linked to Rising Crime

Authorities in Rwanda’s Eastern Province have raised serious concerns about excessive alcohol consumption, warning that it is increasingly contributing to crime and social instability. Provincial leaders say alcohol abuse has become one of the major drivers of insecurity, affecting families, communities, and overall development in the region.

They are now urging residents, local leaders, and business owners to work together to address the growing problem before it further undermines public safety and social cohesion.

Alcohol Linked to Majority of Reported Crimes

According to provincial data, a significant proportion of crimes recorded over the past year were connected to alcohol abuse. Authorities estimate that alcohol played a role in nearly 70 percent of reported cases, including domestic violence, family disputes, assaults, and other criminal acts.

Leaders explain that excessive drinking often impairs judgment and weakens self-control, increasing the likelihood of violent behavior and reckless decisions. In many cases, what begins as minor disagreements escalates into serious conflicts under the influence of alcohol.

Leaders Speak Out on Radio Nyagatare

The concerns were highlighted on February 10, 2026, during a live interview on Radio Nyagatare. The program featured Eastern Province Governor Pudence Rubingisa and Hamdun Twizeyimana, Police Spokesperson for the Eastern Region.

During the discussion, both officials urged residents to avoid excessive drinking and to take an active role in protecting community security. They emphasized that reducing alcohol abuse is essential to lowering crime rates and strengthening family stability.

Call for Responsibility Among Vendors and Parents

Governor Rubingisa stressed that alcohol should never become a trigger for violence or criminal behavior. He called on bar owners and alcohol vendors to strictly comply with regulations governing operating hours and responsible alcohol sales.

In addition, he urged parents to monitor their children closely and prevent early exposure to alcohol. He noted that underage drinking not only endangers young people’s health but also increases the risk of delinquency and future criminal behavior.

Police Intensify Inspections and Public Cooperation

Police spokesperson Twizeyimana confirmed that law enforcement agencies have stepped up inspections in bars and in areas commonly associated with alcohol-related disturbances. He warned that those who violate regulations will face legal consequences.

At the same time, he encouraged members of the public to report suspicious activities or incidents that threaten community safety. Authorities concluded that combating alcohol abuse requires collective action.

Provincial leaders emphasized that sustainable security and long-term development cannot be achieved if excessive drinking continues to fuel crime and family conflict. They called for stronger community awareness and shared responsibility to ensure a safer Eastern Province.
