The Secretary General of the International Organisation of Francophonie (OIF), Louise Mushikiwabo, has condemned an Israeli military strike in Lebanon that killed more than 250 people. The attack took place on April 8, 2026. Israeli forces said the operation targeted positions of the armed group Hezbollah. However, the strike resulted in heavy casualties and widespread destruction.
Details of the Military Operation
According to Israeli authorities, the operation focused on Hezbollah infrastructure. Officials also stated that efforts were made to avoid civilian casualties. In addition, they noted that some of the targeted areas were located within populated regions. This raised concerns about possible harm to civilians during the strikes.
The attack came during a period of reduced regional tensions. Earlier, Israel and the United States had temporarily halted strikes on Tehran since February 2026. This followed a request for a short ceasefire linked to peace negotiations.
Casualties and Humanitarian Impact
Despite official statements, a Lebanese human rights organization reported that the strikes severely affected civilian areas. These included residential neighborhoods and commercial zones.
According to the report, at least 254 people were killed across more than 100 locations. In addition, about 1,165 people were injured.
Lebanon’s Minister of Health, Rakan Nasserddine, said the country was facing an emergency situation. He also called on the international community to help support medical response efforts for the wounded.
Louise Mushikiwabo Calls for Respect of International Law
On April 9, the International Organisation issued a statement confirming Louise Mushikiwabo’s strong condemnation of the attack. She also expressed condolences to the families of the victims. “The Secretary General of the International Organisation condemns the attack carried out against Lebanon and its capital She extends her condolences to the bereaved families,” the statement said.
Furthermore, she called for full respect of international law. She also welcomed ongoing ceasefire efforts involving the United States and Iran.
She urged stronger diplomatic engagement to achieve lasting peace in the Middle East and to prevent further loss of life.
