At GS Kamwambi Primary and Secondary School in Huye District, a senior student caused a stir after refusing to be reprimanded by a teacher assigned to kindergarten classes. TUYIZERE Zakaria, an S6 student and former student representative, argued that he should not be disciplined for being late because senior students were exempt from early entry rules.

The incident took place in Rwaniro Sector, Kamwambi Cell, highlighting tensions between school regulations and student perceptions of authority.
Clash with an Intern Teacher
The teacher involved, UWAMAHORO Jean Bosco, primarily teaches nursery children but was interning with S1 and S2 students while pursuing university studies. On the day of the incident, UWAMAHORO scolded late-arriving students in S1. Zakaria felt humiliated and confronted the teacher, saying:“You are not my teacher, so you should not control or punish me. Focus on the nursery kids you are supposed to teach.”
The situation escalated when Zakaria appeared ready to hit the teacher. UWAMAHORO fled to the classroom, narrowly avoiding confrontation. Zakaria followed, slammed the door, and demanded: “Please come out.”
The teacher remained silent, and the immediate incident ended without further escalation.
Tensions Cool, Respect Addressed
The following morning, Zakaria approached UWAMAHORO to greet him. He added: “It’s time for us to be really respectful. Don’t try to humiliate me again because you are not stronger than me.”
This bold statement alarmed the teacher, prompting him to report the matter to colleagues and school administrators. The administration immediately launched an inquiry to investigate the situation and ensure school discipline was maintained.
Reflection and Apology
During the investigation, Zakaria was interviewed and informed that his behavior was inappropriate, especially given his previous role as student dean. After understanding the gravity of his actions, he apologized to teachers and administrators.
The school then summoned all students, urging them to learn a lesson: respect teachers, administrators, and school rules is mandatory. The administration emphasized that defiance or disrespect undermines both personal growth and the school community.
School Administration Stresses Respect
Rutasiyire Daniel, the school official in charge of discipline, said: “As long as you are a student, you must respect the instructions of the school, teachers, administrators, and anyone involved in your studies, including kitchen staff. In life outside school, respect for others is equally important for achieving success.”
The school highlighted this incident as a teaching moment, reinforcing that authority, rules, and mutual respect are key components of student life.
