he military-led government of Burkina Faso has dissolved all political parties and political groupings in the country. The decision affects more than 100 organizations. The Cabinet approved the move on Thursday, January 29, 2026.

Cabinet Approves Sweeping Political Change
The government says the decision marks a key step in rebuilding the state. Officials aim to restructure political governance and restore national stability after years of political turmoil.
Government Blames Political Division
Minister of Territorial Administration Emile Zerbo said the government reviewed the political system in depth. The review found serious legal abuses and governance failures.

Zerbo said the large number of parties created division among citizens and weakened social unity. He added that the reform will strengthen national cohesion and improve government efficiency.
New Legal Framework Introduced
Captain Ibrahim Traoré seized power in September 2022 and suspended political activities soon after. The new decree now officially dissolves all parties.
The Cabinet also decided to transfer party assets to the state. In addition, the government drafted a new law to repeal existing rules on party financing and operations. Lawmakers will soon review the bill in the Transitional Legislative Assembly.
Political Reform Linked to Development Plan
The Cabinet also adopted the “RELIANCE Plan,” a national development roadmap for 2026–2030. The plan is worth about 36 trillion CFA francs, or $65 billion.
The government says the reforms will help address insecurity caused by insurgents and modernize state institutions in a changing global environment.
