Two people lost their lives and six others were injured following a tragic accident during the first stage of the Tour du Rwanda on Sunday. The race organizers and the Rwanda Cycling Federation expressed deep sorrow over the incident, which occurred in the Gabiro area when a vehicle from the race convoy veered off the road and struck spectators.

Official Statement from Race Organizers
In a statement released at around 3:30 p.m., the organizers announced that the accident happened during Stage One, involving one of the official vehicles accompanying the race. The vehicle lost control and hit people who had gathered to watch the competition.
The statement confirmed: “Two people have died, and six others were injured. The injured are receiving medical care, and we continue to closely monitor their condition.”

The management extended condolences to the families of the victims and reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening safety measures for spectators.
Police Investigation and Safety Measures
The Rwanda National Police immediately launched an investigation to determine the cause of the accident. Authorities stated that findings from the inquiry will guide future improvements in race security and traffic management.
Organizers also emphasized that public safety remains a top priority and that additional preventive measures will be reinforced in upcoming stages.
Route of Stage One: Rukomo to Rwamagana
The first stage of the 2026 Tour du Rwanda started in Rukomo and finished in Rwamagana, covering a total distance of 173.6 kilometers.
This route is known for attracting large crowds, especially in rural and semi-urban areas, where residents often gather along the roadside to support cyclists.
