Rwanda marked the 11th edition of the African Day of School Feeding with a national celebration held in Bugarama this Friday. The event brought together government officials, education stakeholders, teachers, students, parents, and development partners.
The celebration highlighted the growing impact of Rwanda’s school feeding programme on education and community welfare. It also provided an opportunity to review progress made in expanding access to meals for students across the country.
Organizers stressed that school feeding has become an important strategy for improving learning conditions and supporting the overall development of children in schools.
School Meals Improve Learning and Student Well-Being
The school feeding programme continues to play a key role in improving the learning environment for students. When learners receive meals at school, they are able to concentrate better during lessons and participate more actively in class activities.
Education officials note that the programme also contributes to reducing school dropout rates. Parents feel encouraged to send their children to school regularly, knowing they will receive a nutritious meal during the school day.
Beyond academic benefits, school meals support children’s health and physical growth. Proper nutrition helps learners develop stronger bodies and better mental focus, which directly supports their academic success.
Supporting Farmers and Local Economies
The impact of the programme goes beyond the classroom. School feeding also supports farmers and agricultural cooperatives across Rwanda.
Local farmers supply many of the food products used to prepare meals for students. This arrangement creates a reliable market for agricultural produce and helps strengthen rural economies.
By linking agriculture with education, the programme promotes sustainable development while ensuring that students receive healthy meals prepared with locally produced food.
Districts Recognized for Outstanding Support
During the celebration, several districts received recognition for their commitment to supporting the school feeding programme. The districts of Ruhango District, Burera District, and Rulindo District ranked among the top contributors to the initiative.
Officials awarded these districts prizes for their strong participation and dedication to ensuring that learners benefit from daily school meals.
Government representatives emphasized that Rwanda will continue strengthening partnerships with communities, farmers, and development partners to expand the programme further. Their goal is to ensure that more learners across the country benefit from school feeding and the opportunities it creates for better education and healthier
