Rwanda road safety campaign efforts continued on January 9, 2026, as the Rwanda National Police (RNP) carried out a public awareness exercise in Kayonza District, Eastern Province. The initiative aimed to encourage all road users to follow traffic laws and adopt safer behaviors in order to prevent road accidents and save lives.
The campaign is part of the ongoing “Turindane Tugereyo Amahoro” program, which promotes shared responsibility among road users and emphasizes the importance of arriving safely at every destination.

Focus on High-Traffic Areas
Police conducted the awareness activities in high-traffic zones, particularly around Kayonza Bus Park, an area known for frequent congestion and increased accident risks.
By targeting busy transport hubs, officers sought to reach a large number of road users within a short time. The campaign engaged drivers of public and private vehicles, motorcyclists, cyclists, passengers, and pedestrians.
During the exercise, officers reminded participants that road safety depends on cooperation from everyone, not only law enforcement. They stressed that each road user has a role to play in preventing accidents and protecting lives.
Police Urge Road Users to Obey Traffic Laws
While addressing the public, Rwanda National Police Spokesperson ACP Boniface Rutikanga urged road users to take personal responsibility for their actions on the road.
“Many road accidents are caused by failure to follow traffic laws, over-speeding, and careless driving that puts other people at risk. Preventing accidents means protecting human life,” ACP Rutikanga said.
He emphasized that most road accidents are preventable if traffic rules are respected and drivers remain alert and disciplined.
Advice to Drivers and Motorcyclists
ACP Rutikanga advised drivers and motorcyclists to avoid speeding, never drive under the influence of alcohol, respect all traffic signs and regulations, and always prioritize the safety of their passengers and other road users. He noted that responsible behavior on the road plays a critical role in reducing accidents and minimizing loss of life.
He also encouraged motorcyclists to wear protective gear at all times and urged drivers to remain patient and cautious, especially in crowded urban areas.
Community Welcomes the Initiative
Residents who attended the campaign expressed appreciation for the Rwanda National Police’s direct engagement with the community. Many said the awareness sessions helped them better understand traffic rules and the consequences of unsafe road behavior.
Participants noted that such campaigns serve as important reminders and encourage them to be more cautious and respectful when using the roads. Some also called for similar activities to be held more frequently, especially in accident-prone areas.
Campaigns to Continue Nationwide
The Rwanda National Police assured the public that similar road safety awareness campaigns will continue across the country. According to RNP, the goal is to reduce road accidents, promote responsible road use, and protect the lives of all citizens.
Police reiterated their commitment to working closely with communities to build a culture of road safety and ensure that Rwanda’s roads remain safe for everyone.
