On Wednesday night, February 25, 2026, Rwanda welcomed 164 new refugees from Libya. The government received them as part of its efforts to protect vulnerable refugees.

Countries of Origin
The Ministry of Emergency Management (MINEMA) reported that the group includes 19 people from Eritrea, 143 from Sudan, one from Ethiopia, and one from South Sudan. These refugees fled conflict and violence in their home countries.
Humanitarian Support and Cooperation
The Government of Rwanda works with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the African Union to run this program. The project offers quick and temporary protection to refugees in danger.
Many of them faced arrest, detention, and human trafficking in Libya while trying to reach Europe.
Progress Since 2019
Rwanda has welcomed about 2,760 refugees since 2019. More than 2,500 later moved to safer countries in Europe and the United States. There, they started new and stable lives.
