The Government of Rwanda has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening agriculture and livestock as key pillars of the national economy, with a particular focus on increasing the production of maize and soybeans. The initiative is aimed at enhancing national food security, improving household incomes, and reducing malnutrition across the country.
By prioritizing these strategic crops, the government seeks to ensure a stable food supply while supporting farmers to increase productivity and resilience.
Senate and MINAGRI Review Sector Performance
The commitment was reiterated during a high-level meeting that brought together Senators from the Committee on Finance and State Property and officials from the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Resources (MINAGRI). The meeting, held at the Senate headquarters, was chaired by the Minister of Agriculture and Animal Resources, Dr. Telesphore Ndabamenye.
During the discussions, Senators reviewed the overall performance of the agriculture and livestock sector, highlighting progress achieved in boosting crop and animal production. They also assessed ongoing programmes aimed at modernizing agriculture and supporting farmers through improved inputs, extension services, and access to markets.
Addressing Challenges and Strengthening Agricultural Growth
The meeting further examined key challenges affecting maize and soybean production, including climate variability, access to quality seeds, and post-harvest losses. Participants emphasized the importance of adopting climate-smart agriculture practices, strengthening irrigation infrastructure, and enhancing value addition to improve productivity and sustainability.
Both the Senate and MINAGRI reaffirmed their commitment to continued collaboration in addressing these challenges. The government underscored that sustained investment in agriculture and livestock remains essential for economic growth, improved nutrition, and the long-term wellbeing of Rwandan citizens.
