The construction of a modern maternity ward at Nyamata Hospital in Bugesera District has reached 89.49% completion, marking a significant step forward in improving maternal and child healthcare services in the region. The near-completion of the project reflects the government’s continued investment in strengthening the national health system.
Project Aimed at Reducing Maternal and Neonatal Mortality
The maternity ward is part of broader efforts to enhance healthcare delivery, reduce maternal and neonatal mortality, and improve access to quality medical services. Nyamata Hospital serves a large population in Bugesera District as well as patients from neighboring areas, making the expansion both timely and critical.

Increased Capacity for Expectant Mothers
Once fully operational, the new maternity ward will be able to accommodate up to 120 mothers. The facility is being equipped with modern maternity beds and essential medical equipment to ensure quality care for women before, during, and after childbirth in a safe and supportive environment.
Dedicated Neonatal Care Unit
In addition to maternity services, the facility will include a Neonatal Care Unit (NCU) with 60 beds. The unit will provide specialized care for premature babies, newborns with medical complications, and infants requiring urgent medical attention, delivered by trained healthcare professionals using modern neonatal equipment.
