Construction of the new power substation in Nyagatare District has now reached 70 percent. This project is part of Rwanda’s efforts to strengthen electricity supply in the Eastern Province. As a result, residents and institutions will soon enjoy more reliable power.
The substation is located in Mbare Cell, Karangazi Sector. Construction began in June 2025, and the project is expected to finish by May 2026. With a budget of 9 billion Rwandan Francs, the substation will increase electricity supply in the district and reduce frequent outages, especially in rural and fast-growing areas.
Expanding Electricity Access and Supporting Growth
The substation will receive electricity from the Gabiro substation in Gatsibo District and then distribute it across Nyagatare and nearby areas. This setup will ensure stable electricity for homes, schools, businesses, and industries. Moreover, it will reduce disruptions that often affected daily activities.
Currently, 85 percent of Nyagatare’s population has electricity. After completion, more villages and sectors will gain access to power. Consequently, residents expect this project to boost economic growth, create jobs, improve farming productivity, and raise living standards. Engineers confirm that the substation is built following strict safety and quality standards, ensuring it meets the district’s growing electricity needs.
Overall, this project highlights the Government of Rwanda’s commitment to investing in energy infrastructure. By expanding electricity access, it supports sustainable development and improves livelihoods in the Eastern Province.
