Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has strongly denied claims made by Barbara Itungo, the wife of opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, also known as Bobi Wine. Itungo said her home was raided and that she was assaulted during the recent election period. Gen. Muhoozi called these claims false.
Gen. Muhoozi responded on his X (formerly Twitter) account, insisting that his soldiers were not involved.
“My soldiers did not beat Barbie… Kabobi’s wife. First of all, we do not beat women; they are not worth our time. We are looking for her cowardly husband, not her,” he wrote.
Barbara Itungo’s Account
Barbara Itungo held a press briefing on January 24, 2025, describing a raid on her home. She said armed men assaulted her because she refused to give them her phone password. According to her, the incident happened during the January 15, 2026 elections and involved men she called “specially selected.” They also attacked her domestic staff.
Itungo explained that the raid occurred while her husband, Bobi Wine, was in hiding after escaping security forces who had surrounded their home. Bobi Wine remains a central opposition figure and critic of the current administration.
Post-Election Security Operations
Gen. Muhoozi has openly discussed security actions taken after the elections. He said that about 2,000 opposition supporters were arrested and 30 were killed.
“We are actively pursuing those who opposed the administration after the elections became violent,” he noted. These remarks highlight the government’s crackdown on opposition figures and supporters, contributing to rising political tensions in the country.
