On the morning of 20 January 2026, the Governor of Eastern Province, Prudence Rubingisa, along with leaders from Ngoma District and neighboring districts, visited the Muhazi Water Treatment Plant in Ngoma District. The visit was aimed at assessing the progress of the ongoing construction works, which have now reached 92% completion, signaling that the project is approaching its final stage and will soon begin operations.
Enhancing Access to Clean Water
The Muhazi Water Treatment Plant is part of the government’s major infrastructure initiatives designed to improve access to clean and safe water. The project aims to enhance community welfare, reduce the prevalence of waterborne diseases, and provide reliable water supply to residents in the region.
Serving Hundreds of Thousands of Residents
Once the first phase of the plant becomes operational, it is expected to supply clean water to more than 534,000 residents, including 327,714 people in Ngoma District and 220,853 residents of Kayonza District. The initiative is anticipated to address long-standing challenges of water scarcity and ensure sustainable access to potable water for both domestic and commercial use.
Boosting Regional Development and Health
Governor Rubingisa emphasized that the Muhazi Water Treatment Plant will not only improve health and sanitation standards but also support economic development by providing a stable water supply for agriculture, small industries, and local businesses. The completion of the plant is expected to serve as a model for future water infrastructure projects across the Eastern Province.
