During the official opening of Itorero Inkomezabigwi Phase 13, Bugesera District Mayor Richard Mutabazi described Itorero as a key civic education platform. He explained that the programme builds national values and cultural principles that shape responsible, skilled, and self-disciplined citizens.
“Itorero creates an important space for promoting Rwandan values and cultural norms. It trains young people to love their country, serve it, and protect it,” Mayor Mutabazi said.
Moreover, he noted that Itorero strengthens patriotism and helps young people develop a shared national identity. As a result, youth gain a deeper sense of responsibility toward their country and communities.
Unity and Youth Engagement in Community Development
The mayor further stressed that national unity remains Rwanda’s greatest strength. Therefore, he encouraged young people to use the knowledge and skills they gain through education and life experience to solve challenges in their communities.
“This unity is our source of strength. You must use your knowledge and skills to find solutions to community problems and play an active role in national development,” he added.
Through active participation, youth directly support local development. At the same time, they help strengthen social cohesion across their communities.
Training Activities and Youth Expectations
At the district level, Inkomezabigwi Itorero activities will take place in Mayange Sector. Participants will receive training in patriotism, national values, cultural ethics, Rwandan history, entrepreneurship, teamwork, and community development.
In addition, participants and community members described the programme as impactful and transformative. They said it gives young people a clear vision, strong patriotism, and a commitment to sustainable development.
Finally, they called on youth to fully engage in the training and apply the lessons learned. By doing so, they will become a strong foundation for Rwanda’s future.
