The Gisagara District administration has announced that 10,003 children who had dropped out of school have been successfully reintegrated into the education system, marking a major milestone in efforts to ensure inclusive education.
Sports and Entertainment Drive School Return
District officials attribute the success to innovative approaches, including the introduction of sports and entertainment groups that keep children engaged and connected to school. These activities use children’s love for play to promote positive values such as discipline, self-confidence, and a renewed interest in learning.
Strong Partnerships Support Reintegration Efforts
Over the past 10 years, Gisagara District recorded 10,583 school dropouts. Through awareness campaigns and partnerships with organizations such as FMI Ubumuntu, 94% of these children have returned to school. The process involved identifying out-of-school children, understanding the reasons behind their dropout, and providing sustainable solutions tailored to their needs.
Lives Transformed Through Education
Dushime Jean, Deputy Executive Director of FMI Ubumuntu, highlighted the impact of combining education with sports and entertainment, especially for children aged 12 to 14 who had turned to work to earn income. “Many of these children are now back in school, enjoying learning and rebuilding their confidence,” he said.
Reintegrated student Mukeshimana Pascasie shared her excitement, saying she is happy to be back in school, playing football, and working toward her dream of becoming a doctor.
District Pledges to Leave No Child Behind
Dusabe Dénise, Deputy Mayor of Gisagara District, reaffirmed the district’s commitment to sustaining the initiative. She emphasized the importance of parental involvement and community awareness in keeping children in school.
With 94.5% of school dropouts reintegrated since 2014, Gisagara District aims to maintain the momentum and ensure that every child has access to education.
