The Minister of State for Education, Irere Claudette, delivered the message during the official launch of the #FresheriKuIshuri campaign in Bugesera district by explained that hygiene in schools is a shared responsibility. School leaders, teachers, students, and parents must all take part.
Hygiene and Cleanliness Key to Students’ Health
Minister Irere Claudette said hygiene and cleanliness play a major role in protecting students’ health. She stressed that schools must give these values special attention.
“Hygiene and cleanliness support good health. We cannot prepare students for the future if they live in unclean environments. Schools must help children grow well, both physically and mentally,” she said.
She urged schools to avoid habits that cause hygiene-related diseases. She also encouraged students to practice cleanliness at school and at home.
Leaders Urge Strong Support for Clean School Environments
The Governor of the Eastern Province, Pudence Rubingisa, said the campaign will improve the quality of education. She noted that a clean environment helps students focus and succeed.
“Cleanliness is not a choice. It is a responsibility. Children learn better in clean schools,” she said. She called on local leaders to keep supporting hygiene programs.
Bugesera District Mayor, Mutabazi Richard, thanked the Ministry of Education and its partners for organizing the campaign. He said the district remains committed to promoting hygiene in all schools.
“Cleanliness is a foundation for development. We will continue to support and monitor schools to ensure safe learning environments,” he said.
During the event, students learned about proper handwashing, classroom cleanliness, and waste management. Organizers also distributed hygiene materials to help students practice what they learned.
