Observers from the East African Community (EAC) have commended Uganda’s 2026 presidential elections, describing them as transparent, peaceful, and credible. The observers noted that the electoral environment enabled Ugandan citizens to freely exercise their democratic right to choose leaders of their preference.
The assessment reflects the EAC’s continued role in promoting democratic governance and political stability across the region.

Official Findings of the EAC Election Observer Mission
The findings were contained in the official conclusions of the EAC Election Observer Mission, released in a statement signed by Ambassador Edda Mukabagwiza, who headed the observer team. The mission deployed observers across various parts of Uganda to monitor different stages of the electoral process.
According to the statement, the elections largely met regional and international democratic standards, underscoring Uganda’s efforts to uphold electoral integrity.

Election Day Conduct and Results
Uganda conducted both presidential and parliamentary elections on 15 January 2026. The EAC observers reported a generally calm and orderly atmosphere during voting, vote counting, and tallying processes.
Final results showed incumbent President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni securing victory with 71.6 percent of the total votes cast, earning another five-year term in office. The mission also highlighted the active participation of citizens despite logistical and political challenges encountered in some areas.
Commitment to Democratic Progress and Regional Stability
While commending the overall conduct of the elections, the EAC observers emphasized the need for continued electoral reforms, respect for democratic institutions, and constructive dialogue among political stakeholders to further strengthen Uganda’s democracy.
The mission concluded by reaffirming the EAC’s commitment to supporting credible democratic processes across the region, noting that transparent elections are fundamental to peace, sustainable development, and deeper regional integration.
