Denmark’s Growing Diplomatic Presence in Rwanda
Denmark initially upgraded its diplomatic presence in Rwanda in August 2025. At that time, the government appointed Casper Stenger Jensen as its first-ever resident ambassador to the country.
This appointment marked a significant milestone, as Danish affairs were previously managed from Uganda. Ambassador Jensen has since expressed his commitment to broadening relations. Furthermore, the two countries share a strong foundation of cooperation.
Their partnership focuses on areas such as economic development, climate change mitigation, and the management of migrants and refugees.

A History of Strong Cooperation and Legal Support
The partnership between Rwanda and Denmark has evolved significantly over the years. In April 2021, high-ranking Danish ministers visited Kigali to sign agreements on political consultation and migration.
Since then, Denmark has actively supported the Gashora Emergency Transit Mechanism. This facility provides a safe haven for asylum seekers emigrant from Libya.
Beyond development aid, Denmark has shown strong support for Rwanda’s justice system. The country extradited two key Genocide suspects: Emmanuel Mbarushimana in 2014 and Wenceslas Twagirayezu in 2018.
Consequently, the opening of this embassy serves as a platform to turn these shared ambitions into concrete future projects.
